AMB Convention 2017
“It’s All About that Base”

Baskets have been in existence for thousands of years! They are even older than pottery found by archeologists. The tradition of making a basket has been passed down from generation to generation. Currently, many crafters are attempting to keep basketry alive by teaching others about the skills, techniques, and materials used in making a basket. Members of the Association of Michigan Basketmakers (AMB) are promoting basketry by offering classes at their annual convention.

Nearly 160 students and 14 teachers will gather at Shanty Creek Resorts in Bellaire, beginning Wednesday, Oct. 25 through Sunday, Oct.29 to learn the art of basketmaking at the annual convention of the AMB.

Teachers from around the United States will use contemporary and traditional materials and teach students techniques to create baskets of many forms and functions. More than 50 different classes will be offered. The convention is titled: “It’s All About that Base.”

The AMB is dedicated to promoting basketry through education, stimulating interest in all phases of basketry and promoting public enthusiasm for its value to the community. The Association was formed in 1981.

Individuals interested in becoming a member of the Association should contact Juanita Elkins at or by phone at 517-388-0041. To learn more about the Association of Michigan Basketmakers, visit the AMB website:
